While I would know the letters, I am not sure if the vowels are long or short so I'll wait for someone more informed than me to come along.

If you do not mind me using your thread, I am curious how you would write my name, Ian:
إان؟
إين؟
(e-yan; the way I have heard some native Arabic speakers say it; I realise sounds change across languages and it doesn't bother me; I got Jan in Germany!)

or something else?

Or is it better simply to go by جون [Ian is the Scottish form of John]... :)

Ahlan Climacus,

I personally think it would be best to write your name Ian in Arabic as

إيان

The Alif between the ي and the ن will clearly represet the 'A' in Ian and also you won't have to worry about vowels when writing your name. For example, if you spell it like

إين

Then without the vowels, the pronounciation wouldn't represent the English sound of Ian.

Fyi - Just out of interest, I put Ian in Google translate and it also translated to إيان

I am a beginner in Arabic language, and when I tried with the words I got it as جاهمار . Please double check this name as I am not sure whether it is right. As I have told you I have just started learning Aracbic.
