salam

I was thinking اى is a colloquial word. I like it whenever i hear it : ) it sounds sweet. But I come across with it in Quran so it is not a colloquial word.Here is the verse in Suratu Yunus Verse 53 : وَيَسۡتَنۢبِـُٔونَكَ أَحَقٌّ هُوَ‌ۖ قُلۡ إِى وَرَبِّىٓ إِنَّهُ ۥ لَحَقٌّ۬‌ۖ وَمَآ أَنتُم بِمُعۡجِزِينَ

I am not sure which أي you mean, cause it could carry the meaning of (which) like in (أي شخص؟ Which person?). The one in the verse means (Yes) and it is written as (إي), and you are right in the sense that people use it in colloquial a lot, you'll be surprised how many words are thought to be just colloquial but they have classical origin.
