Wow, that's calligraphy is beautiful! I had a chance to meet Muhammed Zakariya who's the only official American Arabic calligraphers. He was amazing! I wish my handwriting looked that that.

I can only make out the first word (I think) and it looks like عيد ('eid)

So something about a celebration of sorts?

I'm anxious to know the actual text/meaning! I love seeing this type of artwork. It's more beautiful than any portrait in my opinion. Thank you for sharing this with us!

Postby tomest05 on Tue Jul 31, 2007 11:09 pm

Eid al-adha...is that the holiday it's referring to? But the rest I'm really confused of the lettering... or just not making out the letters at all... hehe.

Salam A7'i Tomes;
Here is the time to answer this.
You are right, it has something to do with the Eid (3ed) which is (3ed al-a9'7a) in particular, the festival that comes within the 7aj time. The calligrapher wrote: 3ed a9'7a mobarak
The word MOBARAK means Blessed,, so it says: Blessed 3ed ad9'7a
Then there is the following famous Sentence in any yearly occasion which is Kol 3am wa antom be7’ayr, means: every year comes with good for you (general meaning).
The font is called Dewani, one of the most complex fonts in the Arabic calligraphy as well as one of the most elegant fonts.
That was it,, if you have any pieces of Arabic calligraphy you want to ask about please add it in this forum and we'll do our best to answer ;)
Salam

I don't know wether this thread is still "alive" since all the posts date back to 07' ...

But I thought I could share some online sites dedicated to arabic calligraphy with you guys !

http://www.arabiccalligraphy.com
http://www.arthafez.com

With calligraphy being frequently used in throughout the Arab world (event title, newspaper, building/shop signs, book/magazine covers, the Quran,...) It's important to train one's eye to "learn how to read it" because it can be pretty difficult for a newbeginner. And you mostly just guess what's written :D

On top of that, there's also handwriting.
I recall our teacher once giving us a handwritten text and we quickly realized that reading Arabic handwriting was the equivalent of learning a whole new alphabet again !

So if I can permit myself, I would advise other learners to try to read as much handwriting/calligraphy as possible, as it trains the eye to the "reality" out there.

Hope you'll enjoy the links ;)
