Question Regarding Sun & Moon Letters

Postby belgrass » Mon Oct 19, 2009 7:40 pm

"The window" or الشباك
is pronounced "A - Shubak" as س is a "Sun letter."
However, when proceeded by a preposition, do I elide the "al" or leave it as an "a"

قي الشباك

"fee A shuback"

or maybe even

"fee shuback"?

Thanks, this has bugged me forever!

Very good point to highlight. The answer is you skip the AL completely.
In sun letters, the (L) letter is already not pronounced, so you say Ashubaak. On the other hand, if a noun with AL (albaab, assayyaarah..) is proceeded by preposition - like fe في - then you always skip the (A) no matter whether it has sun or moon letters, so you say felbaab and fessayyaarah.
So in our case above, the (L) is dropped because the word starts with sun letter, and the (A) is dropped because of the preposition, so we end up with feshubaak.
Hope that is clear enough.
